About Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a transformative cosmetic surgical procedure designed to create a firmer, smoother abdominal profile. The procedure addresses three key concerns: excess or sagging skin, stubborn fat deposits, and weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).
This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, women after pregnancy, or those with age-related changes to the abdominal area that don't respond to diet and exercise. Unlike liposuction which only removes fat, abdominoplasty comprehensively reshapes the entire midsection by removing skin, fat, and tightening underlying muscles.
Our surgeons customize each abdominoplasty procedure to address your specific concerns and anatomy, ensuring natural-looking results that complement your overall body proportions. We offer various types of abdominoplasty procedures, from mini to extended techniques, allowing us to tailor the approach to your unique needs.
Preparation for Abdominoplasty
Before your procedure:
- βComplete all required medical evaluations and lab tests
- βAdjust or stop certain medications as directed by your surgeon
- βStop smoking at least 4-6 weeks before surgery
- βPrepare your home for recovery (comfortable resting area, easy-to-reach necessities)
- βAvoid anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements
- βArrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24-48 hours
- βFill all prescription medications in advance
- βFollow fasting guidelines (typically no food or drink after midnight before surgery)
Treatment Procedure
The abdominoplasty procedure typically involves these steps:
1. Anesthesia
General anesthesia is administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure.
2. Incision
A horizontal incision is made between the pubic hairline and navel. The shape and length depend on the amount of excess skin and the specific technique used. A second incision around the navel may be necessary.
3. Muscle Repair
Weakened or separated abdominal muscles are sutured together to create a firmer abdominal wall and narrower waistline.
4. Fat and Skin Removal
Excess fat is removed through liposuction or direct excision. The upper abdominal skin is pulled down, and excess skin is trimmed away.
5. Navel Repositioning
The navel is repositioned to a natural position on the newly tightened abdomen.
6. Closure
Incisions are closed with layered sutures. Drains may be placed to remove excess fluid. The procedure typically takes 2-5 hours depending on complexity.
